What engine in the X5? If you can find one with the i6 turbo I would suggest that. The early E70 x5's had a NA i6 or V8 I believe. The later turbo version has more torque, and better mpg than both.

This is a 260hp I6. N/A I believe.

I don't mind that it is missing a kidney. The interior color looks great. And it looks miles nicer than the awful chrome-festival that is that Grand.

Christ, I didn't even notice that. I assume the dealer will fix it pre-sale.

First off, do any of the BMW, Jeep, or VW have a diesel? If one has it and the others don't, take that.
Otherwise, it's basically a tossup between the BMW and the VW.

You keep adding cars, but I like this a bit more.

All 3 could be had with a diesel if need be. In this case, only the VW has it.

I talked to my dad (the car's for him). He's just not comfortable driving a Range Rover. Which sucks, since I love them.

For several reasons, he doesn't want a car that screams "rich". Even the Bimmer is pushing it.

The Volvo. Or maybe the Jeep, I;m not sure

But of these three, the VW. (No one cares about the Volvo)
If I could get a JGC diesel without all the insane chrome on it, that wouldn't be half bad. Neither is the BMW. (although hooking up a brake controller is far easier on the Jeep than the two Germans).
All things considered, for my use, I'd prefer an actual pickup.

Most likely the XC70. Because I'm biased. However, I would (only this one time) prefer an SUV to a car.
Gimme an XC90 V8 Executive. I've never felt safer in any car than in an XC90, I'd have the Yamaha V8, which is as reliable as the tides, and I'd have a massaging/pulsating driver's seat!

The Volvo has an excellent interior, and is the most fun to drive and BY FAR the fastest with the TT V6.
A pickup has been mentioned, but it really doesn't suit our needs.

We looked at an XC90, but it just felt a tiny bit outdated.

Oh, it's extremely outdated.
In that case I'd go for the Toureg.

X5 or the Jeep. I'd look for a different X5 though.

Jeep because the BMW is missing a kidney, I dislike the Volvo, and don't trust the reliability of the VW.
Plus Hemi.

my wife can't stand minivan looking ones. so the volvo is out.
touareg drove very nice. there are ZERO features for a 60k suv. cherokee was nice but diesel was too new. so we ended up with a '12 x5

Then it's not really a WWYR, it's a Help Me Choose. :)
Because in my use case, towing is the whole reason for getting anything even remotely truckish, and the Volvo can't tow squat that's more than Class II (3500lbs), even with the T6.
The X5, the VW, and the Jeep can all tow Class III loads (BMW to 6000lbs maximum, Jeep to 7400lbs maximum, and the VW to 7716lbs).

Volvo, because I like Volvo's, BMW's do nothing for me, Volkswagen's are more unreliable that Volvo's(as long as it isn't a Volvo with a GM trans), and Jeep owners are higher on the BMW driver scale than BMW drivers.

Apart from the grill, what would you want different in the X5? Bigger engine?

A) ignore the missing kidney. That's about the same price as an oil change.
B) The Volvo doesn't like you either :p

Nope, but parking over the sidewalk is worse than taking up a couple of parking spaces.

Nah the engine is fine, my current E90 is an I6 and I love it.
Budget permitting, I'd look for a 2011+ just because of the Facelift.
Besides that, it has the third row, which if not needed, is just a waste. It adds a complex rear air suspension. Not really a common thing to break, but why add extra weight for no reason.
The color combo is pretty good, I woud prefer a tobacco interior. Just looks so classy. White is great on the E70.
Back to budget, if possible, just spend the extra $$ to get a nicely optioned LCI model. You can even get a diesel if you want.

I think an XC70 would be a good car to replace the Odyssey with.
